About
Under the patronage of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church of Canada, this dynamic ensemble, united by its love for choral music and Ukrainian traditions, excites audiences with colorful choreography and energetic sound. Lastiwka’s repertoire includes sacred and folk music, from the vibrance of the riding Cossacks to sensitive interpretations of Taras Shevchenko’s poetry; from the piety of the Divine Liturgy to the majesty of Bortniansky’s sacred concerti; from the haunting melodies of the past to the contemporary sounds of today.
Lastiwka is complemented by an orchestra of folk instruments, including ancient bandura, tsymbaly (hammered-dulcimer), mandolin, sopilka (wooden whistle), accordion, violin, string bases and percussion.
Since its inception in 1984, Lastiwka has toured extensively in Saskatchewan, and has performed major concerts in Calgary, Edmonton, Winnipeg, Chilliwack, Victoria and Minneapolis, USA. The choir has performed at the World’s Largest Ukrainian Caharet – Vesna Festival in Saskatoon, and has been guest artist with the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra. The Ensemble was honored by the invitation to perform in the Saskatoon Pavilion and the Xerox International Theatre at Expo ‘ 86, in Vancouver, British Columbia.
Larry Klopoushak has extensive solo and choral experience in operatic, classical and folk music. The founding director of the Lastiwka Ensemble, Mr. Klopoushak has directed the Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Cathedral Choir since 1971.
