About

From Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, the wheat capital of the world, come the fiery gypsy stylings of BETTY and HER BROTHERS FIVE. They are probably the only family in North America that can capture the haunting and romantic gypsy melodies that originated from the Nomad Bands who roamed the European continent.

Music has been an avid part of the Buzash family for years, inheriting their talent from their paternal grandparents. Their grandfather, himself an accomplished violinist, played in Europe before many of the Counts and Lords of the House of Hapsburg, and in Austria and Hungary, before immigrating to Canada in 1912.

Grandpa Buzash brought with him his violin, and the traditions and customs of his native Hungary. He played his way into the homesteaders’ hearts, relieving tensions and loneliness for their native European homes. By playing for each ethnic group, he helped them to unite and forget the hardships they encountered as pioneers. Music, in a sense, bound the pioneers closer together. And today, Saskatchewan people benefit from this early bond, with an artistic and musical culture.

BETTY and HER BROTHERS FIVE, a unique musical family, will leave you with a feeling of awe and amazement while you capture their vibrant musical talents featured in the 15 selections performed in this album. One of these selections, “The Buffalo Days Two-Step” is their own composition and was written as a tribute to Regina’s Buffalo Days Summer Festival. The Buzash family have the ability to play all types of music – western, classical, modern dance, and even light rock. They have performed on radio, television, concert and stage, and also many dance engagements around the westerns provinces, being a great demand for ethnic weddings.

One of the highlights of their career came when they were asked by the late Honorable Ross Thatcher, then Premier of Saskatchewan, to entertain at the Provincial State Functions in the capital city of Regina. They have entertained before such notables as the Russian, French, and Israeli Ambassadors; as well as the Japanese Foreign Minister; and also the former Prime Minister of Canada, John. G. Diefenbaker.

Betty, Jim, Art, Steve, Ernie and Frank dedicate this album to their parents and grandfather who instilled in them at an early age the deep rooted culture and art of Gypsy Music.
