About
The hymns presented here are performed by the Metropolitan’s Choir of St. Vladimir’s Cathedral in the city of Kyiv. This choir sings during divine services conducted at the cathedral by Metropolitan Filaret of Kyiv and Galich, Patriarchal Exarch to Ukraine. Thanks to the concern of Metropolitan Filaret, the choir is growing in size and its professional skills. The choir’s repertoire includes hymns by Russian, Ukrainian, Byelorussian and many foreign composers, and also the works by the most prominent modern home authors. Figuring prominently in it are the religious concerti of Vedel, Berezovsky, Bortnyansky, Arkhangelsky, Ryutov, Degtyarev and many others. The choir takes a particularly reverential attitude to the chants of the Kyiv-Pechery Lavra, adorning many festive services with them.
We hope that the hymns recorded here give an idea of the stylistic features of Ukrainian hymnody, the means of artistic expressiveness that are used, and the great spiritual depth of Ukrainian church music.
